Weekend in New York City
Sensing the need for a break, Ken and I travelled to New York City on March 26 to take in a concert at Carnegie Hall featuring the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The evening started with dinner at Bistro 1605 in the Crown Plaza Hotel on Broadway and 49th where we stayed. The contemporary style of the small bistro was inviting with mahogany booths, stainless steel tables with smoked glass tops. The serving of skirt steak with fresh vegetables was delicious and just the right size.
Conductor, Peter Oundjian and feature violinist, Itzhak Perlman, both in top form, were well received by this sophisticated New York audience who gave them standing applause. We enjoyed the unusual selections from:
Britten Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, Op. 33a
Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26 with Itzhak Perlman
Estacio Frenergy
Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 4
Sunday was our day to travel over to the famous Highline Park starting at 14th street, still quite barren in late March but with a few brave crocuses raising their heads. And later to wonder the uptown streets and venture into the upscale stores to admire spring fashions. With only a few hours of free time on Monday before leaving for the airport, Ken chose a huge camera store B&H and Karen checked out the locations for publishers Simon and Schuster and McGraw Hill. We arrived back home in Niagara-on-the-Lake to almost the same weather we left in New York so we’ll have a slightly longer wait for spring this year.
Sounds like fun! Both of us have been to NYC but not together. We'll make it one of these days. Our nephew Sasha (the famous DJ) lives there with his wife and son, and they're always inviting us down. So, as I said, one of these days...
